"Scotland's national dance company"

Scottish Ballet is Scotland's National Dance Company, run under the award-winning direction of Ashley Page OBE. With classical influences meeting modern dance styles, the Company presents a wide range of high-quality dance to audiences across Scotland, the UK and abroad. Scottish Ballet has a diverse, vibrant repertoire, ranging from new versions of the classics (The Nutcracker, Cinderella), through to seminal pieces from 20th century modern ballet repertoire, including work by George Balanchine and Frederick Ashton, and extending into signature pieces by living choreographers such as William Forsythe, Hans van Manen and Siobhan Davies. The Company is also keen to explore new pieces and regularly premieres work in Scotland. Scottish Ballet believes in pushing the boundaries of dance, with recent productions breaking away from the traditional image of ballet by using music from contemporary artists including Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails.

Coming soon! Scottish Ballet Autumn season A unique and exciting programme, inspired by the music of Radiohead, film techniques and the sophisticated frivolity of the 1930s. From ground-breaking American choreographer Stephen Petronio comes Ride the Beast. The work created for Scottish Ballet, is a celebration of raw energy and creativity. Untamed and truly unpredictable, Ride the beast is set to five emblematic tracks from Radiohead, and feautures designs by uber-cool New York fashion designer Benjamin Cho. From Petronio's guru, Trisha Brown, comes the hauntingly poetic For MG: The Movie. Intrigued by the work of film directors who seamlessly move their charactersin and out of the frame, Brown reinterprets this in a fasinating piece set to a specially commissioned soundscape by maverick composer Alvin Curran. Taking its cue from the music and cinema of the 1930s, Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director, Ashley Page premieres a brand new ballet that borrows its title from Denn

Life on the road...
For a real look behind the scenes follow this link: http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/what...
We have some exclusive photographs taken by our dancers across the country with a little help from our friends at Casio!

In the mean time catch up with Scottish Ballet dancer Gregory Dean as he continues his blog of the current tour.

So the first few shows are done and dusted!

I have to say I am so, so happy with my piece!
Luckily I had Mary in wardrobe and George, in the technical crew, to bring it to life!!
The costumes look great and the lighting is more than I could have expected!

It was bizarre to watch it for the first time on stage with a real audience. I had to work hard to let go of my ‘critical eye’ and just enjoy my amazing dancers moving through space! I must confess I did get a bit damp eyed!!

I’m intrigued to know how the other group are getting on! I hear good things coming from the Highlands, but sadly wasn’t able to go up and see them perform it as I still have to dance in the shows down here!! I just hope they’re enjoying it!

Only three more shows to go for our group on tour and I am looking forward to having the piece filmed so that I can finally show the finished product to my mum!!!

I definitely feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to have the piece take on its own life and be shown to such a wide audience! I think with all the changes going on in my life it may be a while before I get any kind of chance to do this again so will be definitely making the most of the last three shows.

I want to say a BIG THANKYOU to everyone who was involved in putting it on stage!

Not Long Now
Not Long Now

We managed to twist, not too hard mind, dancer Gregory Dean</a>’s arm into writing a blog for us. Ahead of the Summer tour beginning this week in Ullapool, Greg shares his thoughts, not only on dancing, but on his first outing as a choreographer.

So, since the end of the Romeo and Juliet tour Scottish Ballet’s headquarters have been rapidly trying to get the six individual pieces together for the Summer Season tour. This, of course, includes my own piece, Träume, which Ashley chose from the choreographic workshops way back in April.
For over a month; the piece was left behind whilst the company toured ‘Romeo’ This has meant that this week has been an exciting challenge of trying to remember the steps myself whilst also teaching it on to a whole new set of five dancers!

Luckily both casts have been great and by last Wednesday we were already able to do a full run through. Technically speaking the steps themselves are relatively easy to learn and now that it’s all taught, my job is to draw out as much of the intent behind the steps as possible.

Sometimes it can feel as though I’m throwing too much information all at once and I have to admit that I can be a bit picky about details, but the dancers have been so great at taking it all in.

One of the most important things for this particular piece is the dancer’s use of their eyes and eye-line, so my poor colleagues have to put up with me repeating over and over: ‘eyes up’, ‘eyes off the floor’.

This is the first time that my choreography has been performed to a wide audience but strangely I’m not feeling too stressed yet. I guess learning to dance Othello and also learning Dianna Loosemore’s new piece Lull hasn’t given me much time for reflection. At this point in time I’m definitely more excited than nervous.

Let’s hope it stays that way…..

Thanks for the memories!
When someone mentions Scottish Ballet to you, what do you think of - an amusing anecdote? The first time you experienced dance? Or maybe it has inspired you in some way?
We’re looking for funny and touching stories about Scottish Ballet for our time capsule which will be buried away deep in the building work of our new home at Tramway – what better way to reflect on everyone’s memories of Scottish Ballet, and to look forward to many more to come!
You can leave your stories on our forum where we’ve set up a special thread: http://forums.scottishballet.co.uk/T...

We look forward to reading them!

Went to the matinee at the Theatre Royal today..was absolutely stunning!

The company just keeps getting better and better, this is definitley the best I've ever seen them.
Pastor's choreography was incredible, and so were the orchestra!
I very rarely get to see live performances because I'm always so busy with dance classes or I can't afford to go :P so I usually have to put up with watching videos on youtube..and hearing Prokofiev's score played live really really enhanced the performance :D

I'd like to say a huge well done to the whole company, and i can't wait till the Autumn season :L
